Democrat Jerry Brown assumed Governorship for the third time in 2010, 28 years after the end of his second term. A total of 20 seats were up for election in 2012. Democrats held control of the legislature with a 29 - 10 majority in the Senate, with one seat currently vacant, and a 55 – 25 Assembly majority.
Democrat Sen. Darrell Steinberg serves as President Pro Tem of the Senate with Sen. Ellen Corbett as Majority Leader and Sen. Bob Huff as Minority Leader. The Assembly is led by Speaker John Perez with Rep. Toni Atkins as Majority Leader and Rep. Connie Conway as Minority Leader. The 2012-2013 California Legislative Session convened on December 3, 2012 and is still in session.
